The Mid-Autumn Festival originated in ancient times, popularized in the Han Dynasty, and finalized in the Tang Dynasty. The Mid-Autumn Festival is a synthesis of autumn seasonal customs.There are ancient origins for most of the festival and customs elements. As one of the important rituals and customs of folk festivals. The full moon signify the reunion of people, as a sustenance for missing the hometown, missing the love of family, pray for a good harvest and happiness, and become a colorful and precious cultural heritage.

At first, the festival of "Sacrificial Moon Festival" was on the 24th solar term "Autumn Equinox" in the Ganzhi Calendar, and it was adjusted to the 15th day of August lunar month in the lunar calendar.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, the Spring Festival, the Qingming Festival and the Dragon Boat Festival are known as the four traditional festivals in China. Influenced by Chinese culture, the Mid-Autumn Festival is also a traditional festival for some countries in East and Southeast Asia, especially the overseas Chinese.

The State Council included it in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list on 20th, May, 2006. The Mid-Autumn Festival has been listed as a national statutory holiday since 2008 .The Mid-Autumn Festival in 2022 will be closed from September 10th to 12th, a holiday for 3 days.

Nowdays, eating moon cakes has become an essential custom for Mid-Autumn Festival in all parts of China. Moon cakes symbolize great reunion for chinese. The custom of moon watching comes from offering sacrifices to the moon. Serious sacrifices have turned into relaxed entertainment. It is said that the moon is closest to the earth on 15th day night of August in the lunar calendar. The moon is the largest, roundest and brightest, so there has been the custom of feasting and enjoying the moon since ancient times.

In the Tang Dynasty, viewing the moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival were quite popular. There were many famous odes and songs -- the four forms of poetry and songs about the moon, found sustenance of missing their native land in their poems and songs.
